Laura and Adelita

The air, salty and thick with unspoken shame, hung heavy in the room as Laura and Adelita rediscovered every curve and crevice of each other’s bodies, as if for the very first time. They knew their stolen hour together was fleeting, the relentless ticking of the clock a cruel reminder. But that scarcity only intensified their hunger, made them savor each precious second with a ferocious, vengeful urgency.

Laura needed to be back at the office by 1:15 sharp, lest her absence raise eyebrows. And Adelita had to return to the suffocating facade of her life, a meticulously crafted illusion she wasn’t even sure was worth maintaining anymore. But for now, in this secret oasis, nothing else existed.

Entangled in a passionate knot of limbs and sweat-soaked sheets, hair splayed wildly across the pillow, the two women willed time to pause, just for a little while longer. They clung to each other desperately, gazing out the window into the manicured suburban abyss, so close yet a world away from their hidden refuge.

“Do you think I can see you this weekend?” Laura murmured, shattering the blissful reverie.

Adelita sighed heavily, turning her face away. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to recapture the fleeting tranquility that Laura’s words and the looming reality had dispelled.

“It doesn’t have to be for long,” Laura pleaded softly, tracing her fingers along Adelita’s bare shoulder. “Just a quick coffee date. You could say you’re picking up the dry cleaning or something.”

“Then I’d actually have to get the dry cleaning, wouldn’t I?” Adelita replied, an icy edge creeping into her voice. Her distant eyes followed the trails of glistening sweat that snaked down the walls, desperate for something to focus on besides the pain in Laura’s eyes.

“You shouldn’t let him control you like this. You deserve a life of your own, you know.” Laura rested her cheek against the smooth plane of Adelita’s back, eyes fluttering closed as she listened to the gentle rhythm of her lover’s breathing, the secret song of her inner world.

Adelita sat up abruptly, fixing Laura with a stern gaze. “That’s not fair and you know it. You can’t just throw that in my face. It’s so much easier for you. Everything is just…easier.”

Her voice caught, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She quickly blinked them back, determined not to break.

“I know, I’m sorry,” Laura reached out to stroke Adelita’s cheek. Stealing a glance at the unforgiving clock, she sighed. “Shit, I really have to go. I don’t want to leave things like this though. I get it if this weekend is too tough, but your job is just a job. You shouldn’t let your boss work you to the bone, it’s not worth it-“

Adelita leaned in close, capturing Laura’s lips in one last playful, tender kiss. “Oh, you’re one to talk missy!” She forced a smile. “Now you better get that cute butt back to your cubicle before they fire you. Maybe I’ll see you next week. I love you.”

She swallowed hard. “I love you too.”
