“You Get What You Give”, or “Night of the Meek”, features a despondent, disillusioned man who dresses up as Santa during the holidays. The proverbial red suit is his attempt at bringing charity, humility, and patience into the world. He is not well-received, and instead admonished for his disillusionment. His employer tells him to lower his voice as he speaks passionately about the reality of impoverished life in the tenements. This interaction is reflective of society’s tendency to look away from experiences that are absurd. Serling’s message was only proven further upon his reception of angry letters from viewers, stating that the episode demonized the Santa they wanted him to be. It is this inflicted isolation as a result of truth-speaking and passion that killed Jesus, Plato, and potentially even Serling himself. But, no fear, as blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth
