“Holding My Breath”

I always hold my breath when I take a picture
Not on a phone
Not in a place where it can disappear with the press of a button
But on a camera where the snap counts, where the film is everything.
I hold my breath to keep the stillness and make sure I don’t ruin this moment outside of myself, which is so quiet, and calm, and beautiful.
And why shouldn’t I?
Why shouldn’t we hold our breath and pray we will not ruin what is already so beautiful on its own?
All we aim to do is capture that Thing which can not be captured, and I hold my breath hoping It will not notice me, a humble, starving worshiper at the altar, snapping a photograph.
