Across an endless beach, she follows him. Trudging through damp sand, her lips cracked, and eyes glazed. She staggers through perpetual twilight following a shadow. The hazy shape of her brother, meandering through the bitter fog on a beach that never reaches the sea.
Under smoky skies, parents hover near their children, eyes flicking to the unbarred window as they decide to tell the story one more time. For good measure. The children grip their sheets as the words roll over them, renewing the ever burning fear that fills their lungs. What a brilliant boy he used to be,

There’s evil twins and doppelgangers and the dark, uncanny specters in the other-sides of mirrors that betray their otherness with the occasional malevolent wink at one’s own unblinking eyes, and all that. But that’s not how any of this works. It’s both more banal and pervasive than any of that.

Apparently, the experiment was about how souls work. Souls? I told them I didn’t believe in any of that spiritual crap. They said that’s what they were trying to figure out—the science behind souls. I wondered what the hell that could mean… but didn’t matter to me, I’d cut my own arm off at the chance for food and shelter.
“Oh God,” he whispered. Something glowed behind her teeth. It was an unsettling shimmer, moving within the shadows of her mouth.
The moment the light touched that shimmering mass, it began to move and convulse like waves in a storm.
